By the way: Two Kodi installations also mean twice the effort for add-ons and settings – I would still handle it that way, because Kodi tends to run more smoothly on the laptop (Kodi is quite resource-hungry with a fancy database). A large part of the Kodi fun is lost, but it's definitely enough for the pure "movie off".

If only the NAS Kodi has a database, the laptop Kodi could access it and stream to the laptop via UPnP - but UPnP does have its fair share of problems, particularly when it comes to rendering movie metadata.
